Texas Elder Abuse in Nursing Homes

A nursing home worker in Converse, Texas has been accused of hitting an elderly patient who is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, causing injuries and pain. The nursing home employee was arrested and now faces a charge of injury to the elderly.

In Texas where approximately 11.2% of the population are elderly persons, more than 80,000 cases are reported and investigated yearly. It is believed that many more cases of elderly abuse remain unreported.

Injuries in Nursing Homes

The elderly abuse case in Converse involved a 77-year old patient at the Esplanade Gardens Care. The patient’s daughter noticed unexplained injuries after her mother started living in the facility. When informed of the injuries, the nursing home management allowed the patient’s daughter to install a hidden camera in her mother’s room.

Videos obtained from the hidden camera revealed that a nursing home employee hit the victim in her face and body, and then shoved her into a bed. On another occasion, the video showed the employee pulling the patient up by one arm while she was seated and slumped over in the walk-in shower. The facility later found that the patient suffered from an injury to the back and was in pain, requiring immediate hospital treatment.

If an elderly family member or loved one is injured or displaying sudden behavioral changes while in the care of another person or a nursing home facility, they may be suffering from elderly abuse and entitled to compensation for their injuries.

Forms of Elderly Abuse

Elderly abuse can take the form of physical, sexual, financial, verbal, and psychological abuse.

Manifestations of physical abuse include scratches, bruises, cuts, broken bones, bedsores, and bruises. Financial abuse can lead to loss of property, money, or income, and misuse of the elderly victim’s resources.

Victims often are unable to complain or report incidents of abuse due to their frail or vulnerable conditions, leading to prolonged hardship, pain, and suffering in the hands of their abusers.
