Dedicated Personal Injury Attorney Lea County, TX

The few settlers who once resided in Lea County, New Mexico would be shocked to see how much it has grown today. Prior to 1917 when it was formed from Eddy and Chaves counties, Lea County had little to offer with there only being wagon roads and cattle trails connecting the sparsely situated settlements.

After the discovery of gas, oil and potash in the High Plains, however, the area developed quickly. The county is now well known for not only oil and gas, but its economy also relies heavily on cattle, agriculture, and dairy production.

Today a total of 64,727 people reside within Lea County’s borders. Despite the county previously only being connected by crude passages, a number of important roadways connecting the southern United States now cross through the county such as US Route 82, US Route 62 and US Route 380. These bring a number of large trucks through the county, a danger which all residents and visitors must be cognizant of.

Thousands of Lives Are Claimed by Trucks Each Year

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has shared some recent statistics regarding large trucks and accidents, and the news is not good.

  • 3,802 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes throughout the United States in 2012
  • 77,000 large trucks were involved in crashes which resulted in injury
  • 253,000 were involved in crashes which damaged crashes only

According to the US Department of Transportation, 691 truck occupants died in accidents in 2013 while 2,834 drivers and passengers in other vehicles died as a result. The largest change from 2012 to 2013 were the number of non-occupants killed in these crashes, increasing from 390 in 2012 to 439 in 2013.
