Weekend Motorcycle Accidents in Texas
On a recent weekend Corpus Christi Police responded to three separate motorcycle accidents that resulted in the death of a teenager and caused serious injuries to two men. While investigators are still looking into the causes of the multiple accidents, they noted that the accident victims were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
15-year old Shina Cuevas was on a motorcycle driven by a 22-year old companion on the night of the accident. Investigators maintain that the motorcycle was traveling at a high speed when it hit the curb and crashed, causing severe head injuries that later led to the death of the teenaged rider.
In Padre Island, a motorcycle rider crashed into a truck, leading to serious injuries to the rider. Initial investigation revealed that the motorcycle was running at a slow speed and attempted to change lanes when it crashed into a truck. Police are still investigating the cause of the motorcycle accident.
Motorcycle riders and passengers are exposed to risks of serious and fatal injuries in Texas. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that motorcycle riders are more likely to die or suffer from serious injuries than passengers of motor vehicles.
Factors in Motorcycle Accidents
Speeding and alcohol use appear to be significant factors in motorcycle accident injuries and deaths. In 2013, NHTSA statistics indicate that 27% of all fatal crashes involved riders with a Blood Alcohol Content of at least 0.08% while 34% involved motorcycles operated at high speeds.
Injuries Arising from Motorcycle Crashes
The motorcycle’s lighter size and weight are a disadvantage to riders during collisions with heavier motor vehicles. A motorcycle accident can cause serious injuries such as fractures, brain and head injury, spinal cord injury, and damage to other internal organs that can require extensive medical treatment, and time off work for continuing rehabilitation and therapy.
